10 Ways To Prevent Maskne

Mearing a face mask has become one of the easiest things you can do to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. All over the world, people have been wearing face masks to protect themselves and others, and it’s amazing how quickly we’ve got used to wearing this simple safety measure.

But despite all of the benefits of wearing a face mask, there is a downside for many people… maskne. ‘Maskne’ is the term that’s been given to breakouts caused by wearing a face mask. But as well as breakouts, you could also be experiencing redness, irritation and dry skin.

Nobody wants to experience maskne, but the good news is that there are things you can do to keep it at bay. Learn more about maskne and the ten ways you can prevent it.

10 Steps to prevent Maskne

1 - Keep Your Face Clean

One of the best ways to prevent maskne is to keep your skin clean. Following an effective skincare routine will help you remove excess dirt and oil, allowing your skin to breathe. You should adopt a day and evening routine featuring products that are suitable for your skin type.

A regular purifying face mask can help you keep your skin feeling fresh, while also giving you an excuse to pamper yourself.

2 - Wash Your Mask After Every Use

There are two main types of face mask: reusable and disposable. A disposable face mask should be disposed of responsibly after every use. For fabric face masks, you’ll want to wash your mask after every wear to help keep them clean. This is also good practice for helping to prevent the spread of viruses and diseases.

3 - Give Yourself a Short Break Every 4 Hours

Skin needs to breathe, and wearing a mask continuously can leave you feeling hot and sweaty - something that could cause your skin to break out.

Try to give yourself a break from wearing your face mask for 15 minutes every 4 hours. Make sure you’re keeping a safe social distance from others, and stay outdoors if possible. You should also wash your hands before you remove your mask.

4 - Apply Topical Antibiotic to Help Prevent Breakouts

If your skin is prone to breakouts, you might want to apply an antibiotic cream to your face before you wear your mask. This can help keep bacteria at bay and help keep your skin clear too.

5 - Choose a Mask That Works With Your Skin

There are a lot of different types of masks available, so make sure you choose one that’s suitable for your skin type. You might want to choose a gentle fabric such as silk or cotton, and avoid masks that are made from synthetic materials.

To help prevent irritation, make sure your mask is fitted correctly. Your mask should have a snug fit, but shouldn’t be too tight. If you’d prefer a custom fit, you could always create your own mask - there are some fantastic tutorials online to help you out.

6 - Keep Your Skin Hydrated to Prevent Irritation

If you suffer with dry skin, then wearing a mask can cause irritation, leaving your skin sore and red. It’s important to keep your skin hydrated to help keep your skin soft and to make your face mask more comfortable to wear.

If you feel your skin getting dry, reapply your moisturizer during the day.

7 - Drink Plenty of Water (or Tea!)

Your skin needs water to help keep it hydrated but also to help boost its natural cleansing properties. By drinking water (or tea) regularly throughout the day, you can give your skin the moisture boost it needs, while also ensuring you stay cool.

On hot days, it’s even more important that you drink water. Sweating can lead to dehydration, which can cause your skin to dry out. Carry a bottle around with you and sip regularly throughout the day.

8 - Carry a Spare Mask With You

If you feel your skin becoming hot and sweaty, then it’s time to change your mask. Carrying spare masks around with you gives you the chance to change it up as you need to so that you can keep your skin feeling fresh.

9 - Practice Good Skin Hygiene Everywhere

Your skin could be more susceptible to maskne if you’re already suffering from blocked pores and breakouts. By maintaining good skin hygiene everywhere, your skin will have a good foundation for avoiding maskne. Remove makeup at night, change your pillows regularly and use clean towels and makeup brushes to help you maintain clear skin
